"What is a Pentalobe Screwdriver, and why do I need one?"
A Pentalobe screwdriver is a custom made screwdriver which can remove the new type of screws called pentalobe screws that Apple are using to secure the casings to their devices
Apple have recently started using the new 'tamperproof' screw, most notably on the new iphone 4. They have seemingly done this to stop owners being able to open their own iphone 4 and making unsanctioned modifications, changing their own batteries or fixing thier iphone 4, thus avoiding the charges imposed by apple for relevant repair services.
Apple have gone as far as replacing the original screws with pentalobe screws when owners take their iphone 4 in for repair. They apparently do not inform the owner of the phone they they are going to do this, or have done it.
Why would you want to open your iphone 4?
Well you might want to replace the battery yourself, which by all accounts is quite easy if you can get the screws undone, this could save you anywhere between £30, or a whopping £50 by Apple if your iphone is out of the warrenty period.
What apple devices are currently using the pentalobe screw?
- The 2010 MacBook Air uses this screw on the lower case to prevent any access to the internals.
- Iphone 4's that have been repaired by Apple in the UK and US
- Japanese versions of the iPhone 4
- All new Iphone 4's in the US are now being fitted with the pentalobe screw
